A furnace that won’t start is stressful in a Pennsylvania winter. Before you call, there are a few safe things you can check yourself — and a few situations where you should stop and call a professional immediately.
Safe checks to try first
- Confirm the thermostat is set to “heat” and above room temperature
- Replace the thermostat batteries if it’s blank
- Check that the furnace switch and breaker are on
- Make sure the filter isn’t severely clogged
- Confirm the furnace door panel is fully closed
Stop and call right away if…
- You smell gas — leave the house and call from outside
- Your carbon-monoxide alarm is sounding
- You see soot, scorching, or water around the unit
- The system repeatedly trips the breaker
If the basics check out and it still won’t fire, our 24/7 team can diagnose and repair most furnaces on the first visit.
